may the odds be ever in your favor

It’s an extra post this week because i’m still riding the adrenaline high of the Marriott Hunger Games this morning. I was successful and got our room through a lot of shaking and heart pounding (WHY IS “ORGANIZATION” A REQUIRED FIELD?). Only thing I’m concerned with is that I used a card I usually only use in emergencies – decided it would be the best option – and I’m worried that card is going to see it as “unusual activity” and decline the charge because I literally never use it LOL. I got on their chat and asked them to please note my account that the charge is valid.

Anyway, next year will be my TRUE 20th Dragoncon. (If I counted the 2020 virtual con, this year was the 20th, but I’ve decided not to count that because laying on the couch at my house all weekend doesn’t count as dragoncon), and last night I mentioned that to Chase. He immediately said “You cannot bring 20 costumes.”

He knows me so well LOL because I was thinking it would be fun to bring one costume from every year. Which I’m not going to do – I don’t have the energy for 12 costumes anymore let alone 20 – but just for fun, I’m going to pick which one I would HYPOTHETICALLY take.

2002
I took 6 costumes to Dcon 2002 – out of those, 2 don’t exist anymore (hermione and buffy), 3 would need major repairs (first padme lake dress, ocha, and she-ra), so that leaves only one fully wearable without needing repairs and that’s Shadowcat.

She’s still wearable because I updated her to wear at dcon 2014. New tights and new mask.
So that’s my 2002 pick.

2003
I took 9 costumes in 2003. I think the only still wearable without major repairs or replacing parts is Belldandy, but I don’t really want to do her because she wasn’t made for dcon and I only wore her for a bit. Instead I’m going to go with Teela.

I’d probably get a new wig, make a new tiara, update the top piece and Orko would need some repairs (he’s lost his eyes)

2004
Aw 2004 is the easy answer. Because I’ve been looking for an excuse to wear her again anyway.

Ozma! I actually would finally make my OZ staff if I were going to bring her back but that’s the only thing I’d change.

2005
This one is also easy.

It’s gotta be Belle.

2006
This was the first year I took a TON of costumes (first year we drove). Looking at the options I think it’s gotta be Corde.

I think I might touch up the weathering a bit and maybe tweak the wig. I mean yeah the wig can look horrible and it’s accurate LOL but over the years of being stored in a box it’s become a bit bent and sits at a funny angle when I put it on.

2007
Anther one with an easy answer – though this one would need some work.

I think I’d make a new pair of shoes if I could manage to cull the leather from the pair of boots I used most recently (which are falling apart). All the painted pieces would need touched up and the helmet needs a small repair. These are all things I’ve been wanting to do for ages though so I’d do it fo rthis.

2008
Hmmmm I’m struggling with 2008. Ame-Comi WW is out, it’s still wearable but I’m not as comfortable wearing it anymore. Same with Black Canary. Selene and Zatanna I sold. I can’t fit in Giselle. Not interested in Poison Ivy. Glinda and werewolf Belle would need major repairs and I don’t just love either of them either. That just leaves Starfire or Scarlet Witch. I know Scarlet Witch is wearable because I just did some videos with her earlier this year, but she wasn’t made for Dcon, so I think my answer has to be:

It would need some major repairs, which i’ve tried to avoid anything that bad on this list — but like KC Wonder Woman, it’s repairs I’ve been needing to do for years so I could get it shot on the white backrop. Restyle the wig, remove the bra from the suit/fix it, repaint the chest piece, replace missing beads on the brooch… off the top of my head.

2009
I had an immediate answer for this year but looking at the list, there’s a few contenders. Classic Wonder Woman would be fun, though I think I’d have to make a new bodice. Certain parts of me are bigger than they used to be and when I put this on for a dressing video last year, it was very close to a wardrobe malfunction LOL. Marvel Girl’s another contender, I just took her back in 2018. But I think I’m going to stick with my immediate answer.

I would want to do some updates. But nothing major. I still love this costume despite it’s flaws.

2010
At first I was thinking “what in the world would I want to take from 2010, none of those costumes are my favourites” but now I’m sitting here looking at the list and I can’t decide, there’s several good choices.
Lady Gaga and Donna Troy are out, I sold them. Also disqualifying the repeat costumes/costumes I didn’t make for dcon. That leaves Black Widow (nah), Magik (hmm), Arica (hmm), Ame-Comi Supergirl (hmm), and Alyss.
Alyss and Magik both have the same issues – they’re both costumes I LIKED but never wore much again so I’d love a reason to wear them. But both have been in storage so long and so disused I know they’d need some repairs and updates just due to sitting unused so long.
I really love Ame-Comi Supergirl. It’s one of my fav comic book costumes I’ve done. So it’s a real contender.
And Arica is the same, I loved how it turned out, and I’m tempted to do it because so few of my Star Wars costumes have made the cut!
Man I’m kinda stuck here.

Fuck it I’m just gonna go with Supergirl because it’s what my brain says “ooh wear that” to most.

2011
It’s no contest.

OH! But good news! I did a Marie Antoinette dressing video for tiktok back in 2019 and at that time, I couldn’t find my “Police box” sign for the TARDIS version. I turned my sewing room upside down, couldn’t find it anywhere. Finally had to assume it got thrown away by mistake at some point. I had to make new (not as good) version for the video. Well when I was reorganizing costumes into garment bags a couple of weeks ago, guess what I found stuck to the zipper at the bottom of one of the garment bags! I was so happy!

2012
I mean..

I thought about 2012 Belle but I already picked the earlier belle. Sarah Sanderson is not as fun without my sisters. Batgirl and Wasp would need repairs. So it’s gotta be Time Lord.

2013
It’s kind of a toss up between Romana, Glimmer, and Trillian.

I’m going with Trillian. I know she’s the least exciting option, but I’ve worn her there so much the last few years she’s sort of become my “late night Dragoncon uniform” that I feel like I’d need to continue that.

2014
I gotta go with

Because it’s still like in my top 3 all time costumes.
Johanna was a contender but it’s so hot. Peggy too but i’d want to restyle the wig.

2015
It has to be

As tired as I am of wearing it. I do still love it.
Georgian Belle was the only other contender and I’ve just never been completely happy with her.

2016
Only had 2 to pick from this year LOL

The only other option (Edith) wasn’t made for dcon, so Tightrope Walker is a shoo-in. Plus I did some upgrades after wearing her at dcon so it’d be fun to take her back in a better state. Speaking of which, I do need to get her out and cleaned up (mostly just check the wig) cuz I have a halloween thing to wear her to this month. Also guess I need to make a mask, guess that’s not going away anytime soon.

2017
100%

As much work as I put into this I’ve never worn it again and I should. Especially since at dcon that year, as i was putting it on, I thought, “I should just take this stuffing out of the headpiece, it doesn’t need it, and taking it out would make it a bit lighter” — only for it to then sag backwards while I was wearing it at the con because it didn’t have the stuffing in there. So it’d be fun to bring it back with the headpiece looking correct.

2018
I think i’m going to go with

Kate and Carrie were also contenders. Kate because I’ve been trying to get it back to the con ever since — was going to bring it this year but dropped it at the last minute because I didn’t want to fit the wig in my wig box. and Carrie’s fun but nobody ever recognizes it. So i’ll go with Amidala.

2019
No contender

It’s gotta be the lake dress. I would also like to bring Crusher back, but because of my history with the lake dress at dragoncon (and because I can’t bring back the 2002 version), I have to go with lake dress.

2021
Definitely

So like I said I’m just wasting time with hypotheticals, I’m not actually doing any of this.

But since you made it to the bottom of this post, here are some things I am thinking about for next year.

1. Endor Leia remake
Obviously, I bought the stuff for this earlier this year but haven’t started it yet. So it will happen for sure, and it’ll come to dcon. And it’ll be a tip of the hat 2005 (rebel uniform) and 2007 (endor gear)
2. Belle remake
Been wanting to do version 3 for years now. Another tip of the hat to 2005 and 2012 Belles.
3. Padme
Dunno which yet, but focusing on AOTC. I feel like doing another Padme is a nice nod to how many Padme costumes I’ve done over the years.
4. Anne Boleyn
And another nod, I’d love to do a recreation of the black Anne Boleyn portrait gown. This one is less high on the ‘want to do’ list so we’ll see if this sticks.

And that’s kinda it. I got a few more ideas in the folder but I really don’t want another repeat of how hectic this year was. August was not fun. I’d like to keep it at 4 new and have like Endor Leia finished by like Feb.

Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled blog posts
